In relation to what my boy joey has said about Triple X - I saw only parts of it (that would be the beginning and end) and i think it was cool. The director used various eye views which was not usually used in action flicks so i think it was refreshing. Although the ending was a bit...disappointing. Maybe they used up all their energy in the beginning and middle that there really wasn't anything left for the finale. Not like the latest James Bond flick that really shows more in the end.

Now my opinion on the manila film festival: the judges were bought! that is my theory on why Dekada 70 did not win more awards. Maybe we should ask the opinion of filipino chinese who have watched Mano Po if it was really accurate or a figment of Mother Lily's fantasies. I have only seen the trailer and i must say it seems kind of odd that all the women wear cheongsams everyday, except for Maricel Soriano. And i don't recall seeing any good film coming from Mother Lily's studio yet so I really doubt this movie was THAT good...ok so I'm a bit biased. Just remember that this is my personal opinion. I'm sure you all have your own views :)

Joey and I watched Dekada 70 though and i'm not sure if he liked it but i did. I am a fan of filipino movies - being a very avid watcher of the pinoy movie cable channel (you have to watch katorse and lalakwe for major laughs!). I expected this movie to be preachy seeing Vilma Santos in a picket line in the opening scene but the whole film was definitely the opposite. I found the story to be very captivating and the characters very well thought of. Not too many stereotypes and portrayed by very competent actors. Hmm Carlos Agassi as a horny teenager? does that need much developing? anyway, you will find that this movie can definitely compete in the international arena. Gone are the traditional bad pinoy drama and replaced by simple storytelling. This does not mean the story was shallow, it became deeper actually. As i watched it, I saw many of the qualities of my relatives and titas/titos. The woman who wrote this definitely went through the whole 70s experience in a normal household. She showed us how a normal home can become interesting.

For this movie not to even be nominated as best story or best screenplay shows just how underdeveloped or ignorant our film associations and those judges were. Maybe if the movie had more conflicts, more crying, more screaming, more deaths then this movie could have won. It wouldn't be real though. Don't you think we should evolve by now?

I recommend you watch Dekada 70 and watch out for the scenes with bullet wounds and torture that were artistic. Disturbing without the shock factor. You may actually feel the pain yourselves.
