I remember watching Maynila: sa Kuko ng Liwanag. It made me fall in love with our city in the 70's. Nostalgic trip for a time when i wasn't even born yet - or had just yet been born. But there is something wonderful about that period. Maybe the grittiness of the film really showed it. Joey and I went to this heritage tour thing of Manila and even the old pictures sent my heart fluttering with melancholy. Imagine walking down the streets of Escolta and view old theaters, art deco buildings and storefronts.

From Mission Impossible 1: Filipino Filmmaking 1896-1986
Lino Brocka (1940-1991), like Gerardo de Leon, was the spokesman and master filmmaker of his generation. Raised poor and rural, Brocka studied to be a Mormon missionary, worked with homeless in San Francisco, and taught in Hawaii before returning to the Philippines in his late-Twenties. An aspiring actor, he also wrote and directed for the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) both on stage and for its television show. In 1970, Brocka made his first film Wanted: Perfect Mother. It combined the current hit The Sound of Music with a Filipine comic serial (a governess struggles with her brood of orphans), and achieved box office success. Brocka's career was built on the fact that, in three weeks, he could write and direct a film which could make as much money as an American import. Over the next four years he made nine films.
Brocka was a controversial figure, the subject of both praise and criticism. But he was certainly a prolific filmmaker. Among the best of the more than 70 films he made are Maynila: In the Claws of Neon (1975) and Jaguar (1979) which depict the Philippines in a gritty, realistic style. He has was criticised for Bona (1980), which uses well-known movie stars to make a film that, he claimed, attacked the star system; Kontrobersyal (1980), a film condemning pornography, but which was itself deemed pornographic... and Ang Bayan Ko (My Country; Clinging to a Knife Edge, 1984), a Filipine entry in the 1984 Cannes Film Festival which was disowned by the Filipine government. Brocka was a trenchant critic of the Marcos government, and despite being censored (during the latter period of martial law, his films were smuggled out of the country for screenings) and imprisonment, he continued to fight censorship and agitate against the Marcos regime in both his life and his films.

Incidentally one of my teachers in DLSU was Clodualdo del Mundo, who wrote the screenplay of Maynila: Sa Kuko ng Liwanag. Bembol Roco also starred in the film The Year of Living Dangerously starring Sigourney Weaver and Mel Gibson

From star magazine: Attention fans! The latest hangout to spot stars at is not a bar or restaurant - it's the Uvasun tanning center in West Hollywood. Tanning beds are passé among the health-conscious. The latest craze is the center's safe airbrush spray-tan called Mystic Tan. Celebs like Jessica Simpson, Christina Aguilera and Paula Abdul are regulars. But you'll have to look closely or you might not recognize the stars in the waiting room - no makeup is allowed!

Yecchhh...can someone tell christina aguilera that her tan looks ab-so-lutely fake? I doubt Jessica Simpson and Paula Abdul look better either. Maybe someone should give them the phone no. of J.Lo's main man who keeps her tanned thanks to "body bling"

just finished classes for the day. Lucky for us there are no classes tomorrow. I still think it's wierd that the classes this week are kind of light. Maybe because next week are all the presentations and finals. Yeeaagh! i'm going to die. What a way to spend a birthday weekend.

Need to do so much legwork for Marketing presentation. Feel so much pressure since everyone is calling me the marketing specialist...guru..whatever! then I fail them. kablag! see me kiss the floor in shock! I do recall coming here to take my MBA because I wanted to learn more and become more adept in marketing but not much progress...except for Prof. Ned Roberto's class. The problem is it's always at 8am so I'm pretty much half asleep anyway. But when i DO listen, I learn so much! I feel like doing my whole thesis on marketing research all over again! hehe...

So who has watched Van Wilder? THe lead guy, Ryan Reynolds is peeerrrrfect! Who did National Lampoon movies before? Chevy Chase right? But he was not as cute as Ryan. I mean if Chevy Chase hit on me I wouldn't flinch but when Van (ryan) does, it's like all the chicks just flock to him! and who wouldn't? I've been a big fan of his since his "Two Guys a Girl and a Pizza place" tv show. Even then his comic timing, goofy expressions (without overacting or stretching his face out of proportion) show that he can act. And the viewers can definitely relate. If you catch the ending of the movie with cut scenes, there's one wherein he opens the door to find Tara Reid and he gives of this shocked yelp that sounds like a mouse who just got discovered. Hilarious! Of course he slams the door on her...who wouldn't?haha I hate her. She thinks she's so gorgeous. Can someone please tell this woman that she doesn't need to show her belly button and butt crack all the time? She's got boobs alright and they're real apparently but lay off the black eyeliner and platinum hairdo! hey waitaminute...was I talking about Tara Reid or Cristina Aguilera? hehe can't remember! Anyway, ever watch Rodney Dangerfield in Back to School? Or any 80s comedy about school life...this one rocks for our years! Lot's of gross guy shticks but nothing insulting or anything. This is what makes the comedy cool. It gets gross or pokes fun at people but I doubt anyone will be insulted - not the men, the women, the teachers or even the indians (watch out for his indian assistant's dialogues) will violently react.

haaay back to school again...leche!

i think i'm listening to game of love too much...
Clive Owen is the man! i once watched him in some B-movie (b?bad?boring?...could also mean brit = best!) anyway he's starring in Hostage in bmwfilms.com directed by John Woo and featuring the Z4 roadster! pretty much every guy in the near vicinity has flocked to my laptop to get a glimpse of this gorgeous beauty (them the car, for me it's clive in the car). can't wait to see the next in the series: Ticker and Beat The Devil.

I remember the first time joey introduced bmwfilms to me, i was in awe. Of course for my next event which was the Pentium 4 launch, i pretty much made sure that each PC had copies of the films to showcase the speed and clarity of the video...Madonna falling on her hiney and making a complete ass of herself was well received too. Aaaah I miss those computers. Come to think of it...that's when we got together! Joe kept me company while me and the crew spent sleepless nights and early mornings setting up the booths. Ok that's more than a year ago so I'll shut up now. I miss working in intel that's all :-(

day five of the winona ryder shoplifting case. More characters seem to be coming out of the woodwork with bits of revenge, extra-marital affairs and disgruntled employees in between. Come to think of it, most of the photos of winona over the past two years have her holding large shopping bags and arm-in-arm with gwyneth paltrow. Think she did it? well, at least she looks good now compared to before the incident but i must agree with joey she looks tired already

hey it seems like everyone wants to do a remake of Porky's. Remember that movie? with kim cattral...as a brunette?hehe Even Howard Stern wants to do a remake - or maybe he just wants to find an excuse to get attention while doing something ridiculous...

aaaaaargh! need to start studying again tonight! bummer life...
